Ancient Egypt has been very important in shaping modern Western civilization. For centuries, Egypt has occupied a place in the Western imagination as a mysterious land full of ancient wisdom, hidden secrets, and forgotten empires. Egyptian military technology is no exception. The khopesh, a curved sword commonly used in Egypt during the Bronze Age, represents the oldest sword style used in North Africa and the Near East. It is also with this sword that the Egyptians forged an ancient empire.

Defining a Khopesh

A khopesh is defined by a curved blade where the cutting edge of the blade is usually on the blade’s convex edge. The khopesh has a sickle-like shape so that the part of the blade opposite the handle has a slight hook. That’s why some scholars classify the khopesh as a sickle-sword, a type of sword found across the Nile valley, east Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent.

Origins of the Khopesh and its Early History

The khopesh is closely associated with Egypt, but it did not originate there. The earliest forms of the khopesh were invented in Mesopotamia by the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. Furthermore, the Stele of the Vultures, dating to 2500 BC, depicts the Sumerian king, Eanatum of Lagash, wielding what appears to be a sickle-shaped sword. This weapon could be a precursor to the khopesh.

After being developed in Mesopotamia, the khopesh was introduced to Syria and the Canaanite city-states. It arrived in Egypt from Mesopotamia sometime after 1550 BC, during the New Kingdom period.

The earliest metal weapons were copper axes. Before the Bronze Age, only axes were available because copper is not strong enough to withstand the metallurgical processes required to make swords. After the use of bronze became more common, however, the stronger metal allowed for greater force of impact. Blades long enough to be swords could now be made. Over the centuries, this led to the development of the khopesh.

Uses of the Khopesh

Unlike the axe and the spear which had civilian uses before they were weapons of war, the sword was probably one of the first weapons designed exclusively for battle. As a curved sword, the khopesh was used primarily as a cutting, slashing, and chopping weapon. This was useful before the use of body armor designed to withstand slashing became widespread.

In addition to slashing and chopping, the khopesh could also be used for thrusting. This would have made it useful against armored opponents. The hook on the far end of the weapon could also be used to rip away an opponent’s shield. The multiple uses of the khopesh would have made it a feared and versatile weapon. The khopesh may have also been a prestige weapon similar to the role of the mace in Egyptian art.

Influence of the Egyptian Khopesh Sword on Other Cultures

Beginning around the 6th century BC, the Greeks began to use a curved bladed weapon which they called the machaira or kopis. Some scholars suggest the name kopis may have been derived from the Egyptian word khopesh. Additionally, the Hittites, the sworn rivals of the Egyptians during the Bronze Age, also used swords similar in design to the khopesh. However, it is unclear whether they copied the Egyptian design or inherited the khopesh directly from Mesopotamia.

Curved swords similar to the khopesh are also found in east and central Africa. Cultures in the region containing modern Rwanda and Burundi used what appear to be sickle-like daggers comparable to the khopesh. It is unclear whether these blade making traditions were inherited from Egypt or if the dagger design was developed independently that far south of Mesopotamia.

A khopesh-like sword or dagger is also found in Dravidian cultures in southern India as well as in parts of non-Dravidic Nepal in the north. The presence of khopesh-like swords among Dravidian cultures is interesting in light of the link between the Dravidians and Mesopotamia. The Indus Valley, or Harappan civilization , known for its trade with Mesopotamia as early as 3000 BC was probably Dravidian by ethnicity. The pre-Aryan Indus Valley civilization also lasted in one form or another until the mid-2nd millennium BC. This is the right era for transmission of khopesh-like blade making traditions to the Dravidian civilization from Mesopotamia.

The Khopesh and Egyptian Military Supremacy During the Bronze Age

During the Bronze Age, the Egyptians were a world power within their domain. Egypt remained a powerful state through the Bronze Age. The Egyptians, for example, were able to successfully repel the sea peoples yet other regions such as Canaan were less successful. It is possible that one of the reasons the Egyptian Empire was so successful in preserving its sovereignty was because of an advanced military with effective weapons such as the khopesh. Use of the khopesh by itself would not have been enough, but it probably helped.

A typical khopesh is 50–60 cm (20–24 inches) in length, though smaller examples also exist. The inside curve of the weapon could be used to trap an opponent's arm, or to pull an opponent's shield out of the way. These weapons changed from bronze to iron in the New Kingdom period. [3] The earliest known depiction of a khopesh is from the Stele of Vultures, depicting King Eannatum of Lagash wielding the weapon this would date the khopesh to at least 2500 BC. [4]

The word khopesh may have been derived from "leg", as in "leg of beef", because of their similarity in shape. The hieroglyph for ḫpš ('leg') is found as early as during the time of the Coffin Texts (the First Intermediate Period). [5]

The blade is only sharpened on the outside portion of the curved end. The khopesh evolved from the epsilon or similar crescent-shaped axes that were used in warfare. [1] The khopesh fell out of use around 1300 BC. However, in the 196 BC Rosetta Stone, it is referenced as the "sword" determinative in a hieroglyphic block, with the spelled letters of kh, p, and sh to say:

Shall be set up a statue. the Avenger of Baq-t-(Egypt), the interpretation whereof is 'Ptolemy, the strong one of Kam-t'-(Egypt), and a statue of the god of the city, giving to him a sword royal of victory, . [6]

Various pharaohs are depicted with a khopesh, and some have been found in royal graves, such as the two examples found with Tutankhamun. [4]

Although some examples have clearly sharpened edges, many examples have dull edges that apparently were never intended to be sharp. It may therefore be possible that some khopeshes found in high-status graves were ceremonial variants. [4]

The process of folding metal to improve strength and remove impurities is frequently attributed to specific Japanese smiths in legends. In traditional Japanese sword making, the low-carbon iron is folded several times by itself, to purify it. This produces the soft metal to be used for the core of the blade.

Obsidian – a type of volcanic glass – can produce cutting edges many times finer than even the best steel scalpels. “The biggest advantage with obsidian is that it is the sharpest edge there is, it causes very little trauma to tissue, it heals faster, and more importantly, it heals with less scarring,” he said.

2. Kukri

For centuries, this short, inwardly curved blade has been a traditional tool and weapon in Nepal. Europeans first became fascinated with the kukri in the early 1800s, when the forces of the British East India Company clashed with Nepalese Gurkha warriors in a bloody war. The locals’ prowess with the blades—including their ability to lop off limbs or disembowel a horse with a single blow—persuaded the British to enlist them as volunteer troops in their army. The Gurkhas went on to establish themselves as one of the world’s toughest military units, and their service knives became prized for their distinctive shape, balanced blades and superior chopping and slashing power. To this day, the kukri remains a standard issue Gurkha weapon and serves as the emblem of Britain’s Brigade of Gurkhas, which consists entirely of Nepalese recruits.

7 Bill Hook

Evolving from the agricultural bill hook, the martial bill hook (sometimes called the &ldquoEnglish bill&rdquo or just the &ldquobill&rdquo) was a relatively common weapon in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its flexibility and simple construction made it the weapon of choice of many poor soldiers or drafted peasants.

Its design varied significantly across Europe, but it was consistently a multipurpose weapon. Its broad, curved head could be used to slash in a similar fashion to a glaive, while the small hook on the end could catch the edges of armor plate and drag opponents to the ground or off their mounts. Later, bill hooks also had a long spike on top that allowed them to be used as spears or pikes if needed.

They fell out of fashion across Europe in the 1500s, replaced by the pike and arquebus. Despite this, professional soldiers in England stuck with the old bill and bow combination as late as the Battle of Flodden, by which time the Scots had long abandoned the bill hook. Examples of English bills have even been found in Jamestown, suggesting that they were still in use as late as 1607. [4]

The Kilij, Turkey

The now-iconic look was originally developed by Turkish swordsmiths to maximize power in the slashing stroke. It literally means ‘sword’ in Turkish. It worked so well that much of Central Asia adopted it and even parts of Eastern Europe. The secret lay in the double-edged tip. This flared out at the very top, helping make the end of the weapon stronger and more powerful adding to its momentum. A skilled warrior could use a kilij to cut through human bone in a single slash. Turkish warriors liked the menacing look of the sword as well, thinking it made them look both more fearsome and more regal than their enemies.

Khopesh was used in the ancient near east and is principally associated with Egypt. The only reason it wasn't a lousy weapon is that there wasn't anything competing with it. The principle military weapons of that time were bow, spear and dagger. The metallurgy was such that longer, straighter swords were not practical. It is possible that it was favored over the axe due to weight and balance. The khopesh disappeared as a weapon at the beginning of what we call the iron age. Although some iron age examples exist from the New Kingdom period they were rapidly replaced and are all but extinct after 1300 BCE.

The falcata is an Iberian weapon that was distinguished by its high steel content. It is not contemporary with the khopesh and is not derived from the khopesh. The metal crafting was adopted by the Romans but adapted to the straight bladed gladius. From an historical standpoint the gladius (which in D&D terms would be a short sword) was a far superior weapon able to both stab and slash. The best sword and board techniques were developed by the Romans and involve shield and gladius work. Medieval sword and buckler techniques essentially replicate the Roman shield and gladius methods. The falcata was very similar in look to the kopis (which was favored by the Macedonians).

The real weapons that were most effective were the Rhomphaia and Falx. These were primarily two-handed weapons with overall lengths (handle and blade) of 3.5 to 6 feet. The rhomphaia was generally short enough to use one-handed (although that would have been atypical usage). The falx also had a one-handed version that was roughly 3 feet long. Of note is that that falx is the only weapon documented to have forced a change in Roman armor when it was encountered.

Probably 99% of what gamers know about weapons is based on romantic notions of what the weapons are/were derived from the fantasy settings of their table-top/board/computer games. This has almost no relevance to history or to the historical development of weapon systems. Unfortunately this lack of knowledge carries over into web pages on weapons. For example, Wikipedia connects khopesh with scimitar even though khopesh died out

1300 BCE and scimitar did not come into use until

800 CE. But, because both are classed as "sickle swords" and from roughly the same geographic region they are lumped together.

Similar connections are made with respect to falcata, kopis and kukri -- all of which share numerous similar characteristics. But the truth is that they were all developed in different places by different peoples and reflect similarities because their designed purposes were similar.

Of the weapons discussed in this post, the one that stood the test of time was the Roman gladius. That and the bow and spear. If D&D actually reflected real weapons the short sword (ie, gladius) would have the best damage and critical profile of any one-handed weapon.

3 Khopesh

Although sometimes called a sickle-sword, the ancient Egyptian khopesh was more of a cross between a sword and a battle-ax. During earlier Egyptian times, the mace represented ruling power, but the khopesh&lsquos deadliness on the battlefield eventually made it the preferred status symbol of Egypt&rsquos elite. Even Ramses II was depicted wielding one. [8]

A Bronze Age weapon, the khopesh was usually cast out of a single piece of bronze and could be quite heavy. It&rsquos believed to have been an Egyptian adaptation of a large, two-handed weapon similar to a war ax, imported from Canaan and Mesopotamia. The blade had a pronounced curve, like a sickle, though only the outside edge was sharpened. Much like the battle-ax, the khopesh could be used as a hacking weapon, though its shape also made it efficient at slashing. The inner part of the curve was equally functional and could trap an arm or yank away an opponent&rsquos shield. Some had small snares for that very purpose.

The khopesh is a sickle sword from ancient Egypt. Swords were not common in Egypt, and daggers and short swords of different types were often used with the exception of the khopesh. The khopesh is a thick, crescent-shaped blade. It is around 50 to 60 centimeters long. The inside of the hook is not sharpened but the outer part has a single cutting edge. The weapon could also be used as a hook and a bludgeoning tool. It was often made of bronze or iron. Some pharaohs have been portrayed with the khopesh, and some were found in their tombs.
